A LITTLE HELP GETTING STARTED

You don’t need to be a songwriter.

Write as if you’re telling a friend. The small, specific details are often what make a song feel personal.

Start with these five things

  1. Who is it for? Names, nicknames and how you know each other.
  2. What’s the occasion? A birthday, wedding, milestone or simply a thank you.
  3. Which moments matter? Two or three memories, places or things you always say.
  4. How should it feel? Joyful, tender, funny, reflective or full of energy.
  5. What should it sound like? Country, K-pop, soul, folk, acoustic pop—or describe the instruments and mood.

A simple starting point

“This is for Jamie on our tenth anniversary. We met in a bookshop on a rainy afternoon. I’d love a warm country song about Sunday walks, our kitchen dancing and always finding our way home.”

Make it comfortable to share

Only include photos and details you have permission to provide. Leave out unnecessary sensitive information. Describe a musical style rather than requesting a copy of a particular artist’s voice.
